Porec is a former Roman colony that reached its peak during the reign of a Byzantine emperor Justinian. The breathtaking Euphrasius-Basillica, currently under the protection of UNESCO, is probably the best indicator of the glory of this era. Areas of interest include the medieval towns of Motovun and Groznjan as well as the seaside towns of Rovinj and Vrsar. A little further afield, the Brijuni islands, the Roman amphitheatrein Pula and a day trip to Venice are all easily reached from this region.
